Imagine waking up in a cave, alone, injured, and not knowing how you got there. That is how we are introduced to Shori, the main character in Octavia Butler’s Fledgling. On the outside, Shori appears to be a young preteen girl. In actuality, she is a 53 year old Ina vampire. Shori journeys outside of the cave to find a community that has been burned to the ground. She’s assumes that this community was once her home. Lost and hungry, Shori begins walking away from the rubble, down a lonely highway. The stranger that picks her up is oblivious to the change that both of their lives are about to undergo. I really enjoyed this novel as it is not your average vampire novel. It touches on such issues as grief, racism, and polygamy. Its hard for me to fit it into any one genre. I would say it has elements of mystery, paranormal romance, and even a little history.

Beautiful, young women are disappearing left and right. These aren’t just your regular girls next door. They are famous or come from wealthy or very well to do families. The abductor, Blue, is a criminal mastermind who is motivated by something other than money. Instead of asking a ransom from the families of these girls, he asks total strangers. Blue runs a website where he streams video of his victims performing sexually demeaning acts. Anonymous viewers call in and pledge money in hopes of raising enough money for the release of whichever girl is being featured, before the deadline. Former Special Ops Agent Martin Legacy is called in after Blue decides to step up his game and kidnap the daughter of the director of the FBI. Agent Legacy is best known throughout the agency for solving cases that have been cold for years.
Ransom X by J. B. Holder is a fast paced, suspense novel. If it were a movie, I could easily see Jason Statham playing lead as Martin Legacy. There were parts of the story that were a little wordy and at times it was a little too descriptive, but overall it was a good read. I would recommend this to anyone who likes mystery or suspense. When I downloaded it from smashwords.com, it was free. Now it is 4.99 and I think that it is worth all of that and more.
We’re all seeking that special person who is right for us. But if you’ve been through enough relationships, you begin to suspect there’s no right person, just different flavors of wrong. Why is this? Because you yourself are wrong in some way, and you seek out partners who are wrong in some complementary way. But it takes a lot of living to grow fully into your own wrongness. And it isn’t until you finally run up against your deepest demons, your unsolvable problems—the ones that make you truly who you are—that we’re ready to find a lifelong mate. Only then do you finally know what you’re looking for. You’re looking for the wrong person. But not just any wrong person: the right wrong person—someone you lovingly gaze upon and think, “This is the problem I want to have.”
I will find that special person who is wrong for me in just the right way.
Let our scars fall in love.

The Keeper of the Wolf Clan by Red Phoenix is a paranormal romance unlike any other that I have read. Layla’s mother, Mika, has been the Keeper of the Daric clan for the longest. Her unexpected death forces Layla to take over her role in the upcoming Bonding Ritual. No one knows what goes on during this ritual, as the details are kept in strict confidence by the participants, which include 4 Alphas and the Keeper. Layla calls on the strength and wisdom of her mother as she accepts the challenge that is laid out before her. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of paranormal romance and werewolves.
This book left me speechless! I had no idea that kids today dealt with so much on a daily basis. Johnson White High School is struck by a series of tragedies that leaves its students with more questions than answers. What started as an innocent blood drive turns into a catalyst for a major scandal in the community. The school’s new principal, Sharon Grayson is forced to make sure that everything that is done is in the best interests of the students.
The Red Bear Society is a must read for parents, caregivers, teachers, and anyone else who is in contact with teenagers. It opened my eyes to several different issues that I didn’t even consider issues for teenagers.
